If you are thinking about adding Google adsense to your revenue stream,
first realize it won't be but a trickle to start.

Adsense is a numbers game. If you get a million hits a day, you'll make a good living with adsense. If you are getting only a couple of visits, then, ehh, you'll make a few cents.

So does it make sense to clutter up your business message with ads?

Probably not. Unless you are setting up your site as an information portal.
The good old "zine" format. There is a maximum of ads per page that you should also be aware of. Luckily, the maximum in business messages far exceeds good taste.

Here in Google's own words, "In addition to the three standard ad units, you may also place a maximum of three link units and two search boxes on each webpage. You may also place one AdSense for video unit on each webpage if it's available in your language. However, keep in mind that placing the maximum number of allowed ad units on a page may result in it looking cluttered.."

The biggest concern a small business owner should have when it comes to displaying ads on their site is the possibility of one of their competitors ads being displayed.

That would be a shame. It's like inviting a killer into your house. But there are ways to block competitors ads from appearing. You just have to stay on it and block them if they start to run ads.

You probably noticed that the ads all (or mostly) had a business / entrepreneur slant to them. This is because of the most-repeated terms in the web page body. We talk about new business, entrepreneurism, and startups all over the place here. The bots pick up on that and place ads accordingly. It does make some of the web scammers ads show up though and that is unfortunate. Unless you factor in that it costs them money every time someone clicks through on them. HA!
